POLATIS Optical Switch

POLATIS Optical Switch

POLATIS Optical Switch

POLATIS DirectLight® switch controls light from an input port directly to an output port without converting it into an electrical signal. All light on the fiber cable is routed, enabling it to function as a patch panel rather than a router/switch. The switch is controlled by software interfaces ranging from low-level protocols like TLI or SCPI to interfaces for software-defined networks such as RESTCONF and NETCONF.

Clear advantages Include

  • High-density switch matrices occupy very little rack space
  • Superior optical performance — very low insertion loss, very low latency through the switch, very fast switching speeds, bi-directional operation
  • Future proof – operates independent of bit rate and protocol to meet evolving standards
  • Ability to set and hold dark fiber connections—pre-provision pathways for future use, compati- ble with ultra-low and intermittent signal levels.
  • High reliability leading to high availability - dual-redundant, hot-swappable network interface cards and power supplies, robust design

HUBER+SUHNER also offers compact POLATIS optical switch modules which can be integrated into host systems that provide power and communications interfaces

Today's service provider networks must support a plethora of technologies-optical, wireless, DSL, Ethernet, TCP/IP and others - that enable a seemingly endless number of services-voice, data, video, private line, Internet, cloud computing as well as services that are only in the imagination of developers. These networks must do so cost effectively, with both a rapid Return On Investment (ROI) and low long-term operational expenses.

Network equipment must perform more than just a single network function, and infrastructure investments must be simple to deploy and operate with low total cost of ownership. Service providers need a network infrastructure that is fast, flexible, and supports a wide variety of services. All this along with protecting precious top-line revenues. The equipment supporting this infrastructure needs to have a small footprint and very low power consumption to reduce cost and carbon footprint.

Polatis OOO switches support key applications in service provider networks and are managed by Polatis' easy-to-use, remote, web-based user interface. Using Polatis Optical-to-Optical-to-Optical (OOO) switches, service providers can increase revenues while significantly reducing capital and operational costs.

Read more about defence here.

Government agencies and defence organizations increasingly need high-performance communications to complete their missions. All optical technology delivers the speed and scale needed to meet their objectives.

However, they also require communications that are secure, reliable, manageable, scalable and cost effective. Polatis offers proven all-optical matrix switches with best-in-class performance, offering less than 1 dB optical loss, optical return loss of -55dB and DirectLight® piezoelectric beam-steering architectures that are substantially more energy efficient than conventional Optical-to-Electrical-to-Optical (OEO) equipment.

Repeatedly proven in the field, Polatis switching platforms have been deployed over the past ten years in a wide variety of mission-critical government and defence applications so organizations can confidently build secure, all-optical networks. Switching in the optical domain avoids electrical regeneration - so data stays secure. Polatis switches are immune to electronic countermeasures, with no opportunity for signal emission, blocking or intrusion so that government and defence organizations can rely on dependable and secure high-performance communications for mission-critical networks.

Each application for government agencies and defence organizations is unique, and Polatis offers a wide range of solutions for government and defence that help cut operational costs while improving the overall security, reliability, manageability and performance of the optical network.

Network equipment manufacturers need to deliver higher-quality products faster and more efficiently, and they need more reliable test results and increased testing efficiency. Similarly, telecommunications service providers need to be able to measure upstream and downstream traffic to ensure network performance and meet Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and efficiently troubleshoot, isolate and resolve any network issues. Polatis optical switches can help. Available in a wide variety of standalone and OEM form factors, Polatis optical switches augment existing test infrastructures to enable network equipment manufacturers and service providers to efficiently test performance over the network and measure and optimize performance.

Polatis optical switches can do a lot-in small, power-saving standalone and OEM form factors. Not only can they enable a variety of optical connectivity options, like integrated monitoring and testing and automated fiber distribution; they also can accommodate any speed (including 100Gbs) and any protocol anywhere and anytime. This makes an investment in Polatis switches for testing one that will last. Additionally, Polatis low price points and diverse form factors make it easy to integrate optical switch technology into an almost unlimited range of applications, equipment and management platforms.

Polatis optical switches not only have the lowest loss of any optical switch on the market, they also are 100Gbs ready today. That means that network equipment manufacturers can use Polatis technology to test 40Gbs and 100Gbs implementations simply, smoothly and reliably, and optical transceiver manufacturers can effectively utilize high-performance testing. Polatis low-loss characteristics ensure reliable and accurate test results and very fast switching speeds to ensure efficient and effective test processes.
