In optic data communication, receiving either too much or too little optical power will cause high bit error rates. A fiber attenuator is a unit used to reduce the power level of an optical signal.
When it is necessary to attenuate the strength of an optical sign, for example to adjust power at certain wavelengths in an xWDM system or to protect a sensitive receiver during short transmission lines, you would need an attenuator.
